I am delighted to welcome you to the 2015 Palendriai International Composers’ Course and Festival. Now in its second year, this young and unique event gathers contemporary music lovers, enthusiasts, musicians and creators from across the world to St Benedict’s Monastery in the small village of Palendriai.

Its main focus is to create new works for accordion with chamber ensemble and I am extremely proud and happy that this year’s Course will be led by two very talented composers: the composer, conductor and Artistic Director of St Magnus International Festival Alasdair Nicolson, and the composer, violinist and curator Rūta Vitkauskaitė. These experienced tutors with an international reputation will inspire our young composers and provide them with valuable technical skills and artistic insights which I hope will encourage our participants to continue this important work of developing new repertoire for accordion in a chamber setting.

This year, the Palendriai International Composers’ Course has expanded to include an exciting Festival programme showcasing different facets of the accordion performed by a variety of international artists. Concerts include a beautiful fusion of choral and accordion music at the St Benedict’s Monastery; an intimate evening recital of music ranging from Baroque classics to contemporary repertoire in the atmospheric coach house at Kurtuvėnai Manor; an innovative synthesis of 21st century electronics and accordion at Kelmė Manor House. We close the Festival with the world premieres of new work created during the preceding week of the Composers’ Course. This final concert is a chance to see the talents of the future, and experience new music for accordion and chamber ensemble hot off the press, which I hope can have a long life and be a valuable addition to the repertoire.

The Palendriai International Composers’ Course and Festival aims to create and showcase modern music for the broadest possible audience, presenting new music for accordion in accessible and interesting ways. Everyone is welcome to our concerts and entry to all events is free of charge. I wish you the best experience at the Festival and I look forward to seeing you there!
